Hepatitis is a viral infection that causes the liver to become inflamed. The inflammation can be caused from unprotected sex, the use of contaminated and/or used needles, or through ingesting water and/or foods that have been contaminated with the feces of an infected person.
The three types of hepatitis are Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.
- Hepatitis A is contracted through ingesting water and/or foods that have been contaminated with the feces of an infected person.
- Hepatitis B is contracted when blood, semen or other body fluids infected with the hepatitis B virus enters the body or another person that is not infected with the virus. This can occur when sharing needles, syringes, or drug preparation, sexual intercourse with an infected partner or birth.
- Hepatitis C is contracted when the blood from a person infected with Hepatitis C enters the bloodstream of someone who is not infected. This occurs when sharing needles or other equipment to inject drugs.
